Regulation, within nature.

EcoSensory Therapy supports connection and regulation with, and within, nature, using the natural environment as an active part of the therapeutic experience.

Connecting through nature.

Nature as part of the therapy

EcoSensory Therapy is a child-centred approach that can support the sensory, emotional, developmental, physical and behavioural needs of children, young people and adults through meaningful experiences outdoors. Natural environments provide rich and varied sensory experiences — from movement across uneven ground and feeling different textures, to listening to natural sounds, exploring changing environments and engaging in purposeful physical activity.

What sessions may include

Sessions are individualised around the person's strengths, interests, sensory needs and therapeutic goals, and may incorporate movement, exploration, play, creativity, problem-solving, mindfulness and meaningful activities within nature. The outdoor environment can provide opportunities to develop body awareness, coordination, motor planning, emotional regulation, resilience, confidence and social connection, while allowing therapy to feel less clinical and more naturally embedded within everyday experiences.

Space and autonomy

For some children and young people, particularly those who find traditional clinical or highly structured environments difficult, being outdoors can offer greater freedom, space and autonomy — enabling the therapist to work alongside the young person in a way that feels safe, engaging and meaningful.

More than being outside

As with all intervention at Connect, EcoSensory Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all programme. Our Occupational Therapists consider why the intervention is being used, what the child or young person wants and needs to achieve, and how experiences within nature can support meaningful participation beyond the therapy session. Ultimately, it is about using connection with nature, movement, sensory experience and meaningful occupation to support the person to regulate, connect, develop and thrive.
